A Book Recommendation: Rooted & Rising: Voices of Courage in a Time of Climate Crisis

Rooted & Rising doesn’t quite fit the bill for relaxing summer reading, but it could be just the thing you’re looking for to find varied voices offering spiritual perspectives on the climate change crisis. The editors Leah D. Schade and Margaret Bullitt-Jones have gathered essays by writers from a wide array of faith traditions and perspectives and arranged them into seven sections:

  • Rooting in Interfaith Friendship
  • Rising in Political Activism
  • Rooting Science and Policy in Faith and Spirituality
  • Rising from the Margins
  • Rooting in Liturgy, Moral Vision, and Vocation
  • Uprooted, Replanted, and Rising
  • Grief, Love, and Trees

Each section is followed by a brief summary of its essays, a few “questions to ponder” and a suggested spiritual practice or two. The format makes it an excellent resource for individual reading and reflection as well as group study and reflection. And if you want an insightful book that you can absorb in small bits, a collection of essays is perfect for that.
